Eye on Operations: Poultry, dairies in the news

EYE ON OPERATIONS

The Arcadia (Wis.) News-Leader said Gold'n Plump Poultry, St. Cloud, Minn., broke ground for a 24,000-square-foot addition -- the last of four phases -- at Gold'n Plump's Arcadia, Wis., plant. Company officials said the $13 million project will include a 19,000-square-foot processing addition as well as a 4,800-square-foot addition to the site's waste water building. Gold'n Plump Director of Operations Bill Petz told Arcadia officials that the work will boost production capacity to 970,000 birds a week upon completion.

Tom Mosey, owner of Mini Melts, Inc., said his company's ice cream manufacturing operations and distribution rights in the contiguous United States will be transferred to Mini Melts USA, Inc., an entity owned by long-time Mini Melts distributors Shawn, 31, and Dan Kilcoyne, 27. The transition took effect on April 26, 2010. Officials say Mini Melts produces cryogenically frozen ice cream in a patented process that uses liquid nitrogen to flash freeze the ice cream in seconds. The company operates a 25,000-square-foot plant in Norwich, Conn., that produces more than one million gallons of ice cream annually, officials said.

The North Bay Business Journal reported that organic ice cream retailer Three Twins Ice Cream, San Rafael, Calif., has opened an organic production plant in Petaluma, Calif. Founder Neal Gottlieb told reporters that Three Twins has begun supplying United Natural Food Inc., which distributes product to Whole Foods.
