Cargill to install state-of-the-art chicken processing technology at London, Ontario, plant
Cargill is said to be a pioneer in the use of CAS at a U.S. turkey processing facility more than a decade ago.
Cargill Protein, Wichita, Kan., announced plans to invest $22 million (CDN) to install a state-of-the-art controlled atmospheric stunning (CAS) system at its London, Ontario, Canada, chicken processing facility. The system replaces electric stunning and will be operational this spring.
“As we grow our business to meet consumer and customer demand for wholesome, nutritious, affordable animal protein, we continuously explore enhancements that position us as an industry leader in both animal welfare and protein production,” says Claudecir Pagnussatto, plant general manager at the London facility. “Our new CAS system will help reduce handling stress with chickens, resulting in a higher-quality, more consistent product.”
