ExxonMobil Signature Polymers collaborated with LD PACK to develop an innovative frozen food packaging solution that offers a compelling mono-material design alternative to conventional laminates.

July 9, 2026

As demand for frozen foods continues to increase, there is growing recyclability interest across the value chain, and the development of mono-material solutions has emerged as a pivotal approach to help reconcile complex design challenges with the preservation of excellent mechanical performance. Traditional frozen food packaging often relies on multi-material laminates, such as BOPET//PE structures, which can be difficult to recycle due to their multi-material structure.

To help address this challenge, ExxonMobil Signature Polymers collaborated with LD PACK to develop an innovative frozen food packaging solution that offers a compelling mono-material design alternative to conventional laminates.

Built around Exceed Stiff+, Exxtra Seal and Exceed HD polymers and powered by LD PACK's advanced converting technology, the MDO PE//PE structure was designed for recyclability and can provide balanced stiffness for shelf appeal and excellent package integrity after freezing.

In testing against a reference BOPET//PE laminate, the mono-PE structure achieved 100% bag drop survival after frozen conditioning at -30° Celsius from a 3-meter drop height, while also delivering enhanced needle puncture resistance and improved low-temperature tensile strength. The film also provides balanced stiffness for shelf appeal and excellent packaging integrity throughout storage and transportation.

The high-performance MDO PE//PE solution offers a promising pathway to unlock the potential of mono-PE solutions for frozen food packaging.
