Performed by the Virginia Tech Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design, the FasTrack life-cycle analysis uses a multistep handling sequence to simulate rough handling of palletized unit loads.
The need for speed has never been greater along the cold chain, as last-mile demands dictated by the continued rise of e-commerce has added to an already breakneck pace spurred by record sales and increased traffic for cold foods over the past 18 months. Somewhere amid the rush to build new distribution hubs and cold storage spaces is the ubiquitous and often overlooked pallet. Without it, few of the products expedited to market would reach their destinations on time.
The new operation primarily supports a customer whose products are housed in both the automated and conventional storage areas for both full-pallet and case-pick load preparation.
Lightning Technologies, Oxford, Mich., entered into a long-term, exclusive partnership with Microban International, a Huntersville, N.C.-based provider of antimicrobial and odor control technologies, to incorporate Microban’s antimicrobial technology inhibit the growth of bacteria on pallet surfaces.
Using a combination of vision sensors and deep learning software, Kinema Systems’ Pick technology works with commercial robotic arms to move boxes from pallets to conveyors or to build stacks of boxes on pallets.
Upon completion, EDEKA Nord will have a total of 16 case order machines in operation, providing fully automated case picking onto pallets and roll containers.
JMP Solutions, Canada, acquired Alfacon Solutions, a Canada-based custom material handling solution provider, to form JMP’s material handling division.
