Del Monte Fresh Produce, Coral Gables, Fla., announced plans to build six container ships to service its ocean transportation lanes between Central/South American and U.S. ports.
At the 1,200-acre Garden City Terminal, five cranes will move more than 4,000 containers on and off the vessel, including 3,432 export containers and 655 import boxes.
The service provided by container shipping lines has deteriorated since 2016, and is now seen by importers, exporters and freight forwarders as more problematic, according to the second annual shipper satisfaction survey released by Drewry, UK, and the European Shippers’ Council (ESC), Belgium.
The Port Authority Board of Commissioners, New York, approved a major re-development of the Greenville Yard that will include a new ExpressRail facility to support the adjacent Global Marine Terminal and allow the terminal to ship and receive containerized cargo by rail, a capability that it lacks today.
The Panama Maritime Authority granted permits to a private development group for the construction and operation of a new container terminal to be built at the Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal.
