Navigating the Chill: The Advantage of Voice Picking in Refrigerated Warehouses

Supply chain executives are paying the price for lack of agility. About 60% of those who reported rigidity say they’ve incurred between 11%-25% additional operating costs or losses from lack of automation adaptability when dealing with disruptions or new requirements.

October 7, 2024

Picking in refrigerated environments presents many obstacles that can impact efficiency and accuracy, requiring the use of systems that are resistant to the ambient challenges of each warehouse zone, while simultaneously allowing employees to capably perform their duties.

In such environments, the adoption of voice picking technology offers a significant advantage over traditional picking methods. Just as important, beyond the picking function, some voice-directed solutions offer optimization resources that further enhance their benefit to operators in the cold chain. This column will explore why voice picking stands out as a preferred choice.

Hands-Free Operation

One of the primary challenges in a refrigerated warehouse is the physical discomfort experienced by workers. Cold temperatures, sometimes dropping below freezing, can lead to decreased dexterity and productivity as workers contend with numb fingers and stiff joints. Additionally, wearing bulky layers of protective clothing further hampers mobility and agility.

In cold environments, devices like scanners, handheld gadgets, and touchscreens often need larger buttons or specialized interfaces for workers, especially if they are wearing gloves. Conventional terminals and screens are often impractical in cold storage and freezers. Unlike handheld scanners or paper lists, voice picking enables workers to keep their hands free at all times. By eliminating the need to juggle handheld devices or paper lists, voice picking enhances both comfort and efficiency.

Improved Accuracy

In chilled settings, the quality of barcodes and the legibility of labels may suffer. Hardening can lead to label failure and the misidentification of items. Additionally, the cold can cause visibility problems, with fogged-up glasses and insufficient lighting making it difficult for workers to read paper-based pick lists or screens on handheld devices, hampering capturing product codes and quantities precisely.

Many operators must integrate precise requirements and regulatory standards into their products and processes to enhance quality and customer delivery. These include strict compliance with lot number checking, expiration date verification, serial number capture for regulatory purposes, and other specialized instructions. As the final compliance date for the enhanced record-keeping requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act, set for January 20, 2026, approaches, the ability to track, validate and ensure accuracy throughout the food supply chain takes on even more critical importance.

Voice picking minimizes the risk of errors caused by poor visibility or manual data entry. Voice picking ensures a consistent workflow and enforces specific validation points during picking, such as checkstring or scanning validation.

Another feature that supports FSMA compliance standards is the ability of voice picking solutions to incorporate real-time verification and feedback mechanisms, such as confirmation prompts and error alerts. As workers pick items, the system can provide immediate feedback on the accuracy of their selections. Using audio prompts through a headset worn as part of the voice system, operators are given immediate verbal confirmation and alerts of compliance issues that may be missed from traditional handheld RF terminals in the presence of loud fans and chilling units. This real-time feedback loop helps catch mistakes as they occur, allowing for quick correction.

Optimized Loading and Unloading

The entire cold chain cycle should focus on reducing the duration needed to transport a product across the system. Some voice solutions can include added intelligence to create more effi¬cient groupings of orders on the racks, and to subdivide the racks into locations so that items for a given order could be grouped together. Better grouping of orders on the racks can improve the delivery process.

Voice systems can also offer a voice-directed loading application. The application, verifies that the correct racks and pallets are loaded on the appropriate truck or trailer, in the correct sequence. Workers scan the license plate IDs (LPNs) on pallets or racks to confirm what they are loading, and they verbally enter the truck number and voice confirm where they are placing the racks on the truck. The app validates the racks and pallets, and tracks where items are placed, warning workers if they attempt to load a rack on the wrong truck and preventing workers from closing a truck or trailer if there are missing racks, pallets or totes. Based on the information entered during the loading process, a trailer map is created showing the location of all racks and pallets on the trucks. The load map aids drivers during delivery or cross docking from trailers at depots.

Enhanced Safety

Constantly checking screens or handling paperwork can expose workers' hands to the cold environment, increasing the risk of cold stress injuries such as frostbite or numbness. Voice picking eliminates this need, allowing workers to keep their hands insulated within gloves or pockets, thus reducing the likelihood of cold-related injuries.

In a cold environment where slips and falls are more prevalent, minimizing distractions is crucial for ensuring worker safety. Voice picking allows workers to focus solely on their tasks without having to glance at screens or paperwork, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and falls. In general, workers can maintain awareness of their surroundings at all times and easily communicate with colleagues, hear approaching vehicles or equipment and respond to emergency situations promptly.

Faster Training and Onboarding

In addition to the specific cold weather advantages, voice picking facilitates general advantages that create even further value.

Voice picking systems are intuitive and easy to use, requiring minimal training compared to other picking methods. This is particularly beneficial in environments with high turnover rates, as new hires can quickly acclimate to the system and contribute to productivity from day one. By providing spoken instructions and guidance in real-time, voice picking systems facilitate faster training and onboarding, reducing the likelihood of errors and accidents during the learning process.

By leveraging wearable technology and intuitive interfaces, voice picking offers clear advantage, and enhances productivity, accuracy, and safety in cold environments, ultimately driving operational excellence and customer satisfaction. For warehouse managers, it's essential to embrace innovative solutions like voice picking to overcome the unique challenges of refrigerated warehousing and stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market.
