Mountaire Corp., Little Rock, Ark., will invest $17.9 million to expand its Lumber Bridge, N.C., plant, according to the Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer. Quoting a release from Gov. Bev Perdue's office, the paper saidMountaire Farms Inc. plans to both increase production and add cold storage freezer space. Although company officials did not comment on the project, Scott Varner, Mountaire's director of operations for North Carolina said the Lumber Bridge plant annually processes more than 100 million chickens and produces more than 780 million pounds of chicken products.

ABC television'sWMDTaffiliate in Delaware reported that chicken processorAllen Family Foods Inc., Seaford, Del., plans to expand its Harbeson, Del., plant, one of the company's three further processing locations. Officials expect by this September to complete the project, which should take production up from 1 million birds per week to 1.2 million birds per week.
