Just as an axe is known for its cutting edge, a new packaging machine from Bradman Lake Inc., Charlotte, N.C., also is gaining attention for its cutting-edge design. Officials say the AX Case packer can automatically form, top load fill and close both RSC and HSC style corrugated cases - all within one frame.

“It eliminates the need for multiple machines and therefore frees up floor space on the packaging line,” says Mervat El-Rafei, a Bradman-Lake spokesperson. “And not only does the AX save time and space, but it also is flexible. A modular in-feed design means it can be customized to a processor’s specific application and needs.”

El-Rafei says the AX features advanced electronic motion control technology through a combination of robotics and servo motor drives. A compact unit, it can form the case, load the cartons/products into the case and bottom/top seal it at speeds up to 120 cartons per minute and 12 cases per minute, depending on the shape and size of products involved. Tape or glue - or a combination of both - can be provided for case sealing.“The AX Case Packer represents the first tangible sign of new product innovation following Bradman Lake’s (October 2007) acquisition by Langley Holdings plc,” El-Rafei says. “This proves that our strength lies within the diversity of a product range that spans fully automatic flow wrapping systems, carton forming and closing machines, robotic top-loaders and robotic case packers.

“The considerable technical and sales knowledge residing in the group means that we can design, produce and install completely integrated packaging systems that can meet the most exacting challenges of today’s manufacturing environments.”

Bradman Lake said two major food processors already have ordered five new AX units.
