Think of it as an egg roll with a southern twist. That's how Soul Sisters Foods Inc., Paterson, N.J., talks about its new line of Soul Rolls for retail and foodservice markets.

Sisters and restaurateurs Betty and Kathy Dixon say their new frozen products combine fresh ingredients (such as collard greens, marinated meats, onions, green peppers, and tomatoes) in a crispy flour tortilla.

In fact, Soul Rolls were chosen as one of ‘The Best in Show’ by Good Morning America (GMA) at the New York Fancy Foods Show and appeared on GMA and Food Network - Roker on the Road with Al Roker, officials say. 

Four new varieties include:
 
Jerk Chicken – ‘Ja Roll’ - Spicy Jamaican Jerk style marinated chicken breast, collard greens, cheddar cheese, onions, green peppers and tomatoes seasoned to perfection in a crispy flour tortilla. 
 
Sun-Dried Tomato & Swiss Cheese - Sun-dried tomatoes, collard greens, swiss and cheddar cheese, onions, green peppers and tomatoes seasoned to perfection in a crispy flour tortilla.  “A veggie delight”
 
Spanish-Style Chicken – Citrus marinated grilled chicken breast, collard greens, cheddar cheese, onions, green peppers and tomatoes seasoned to perfection in a crispy flour tortilla.
 
Sage Sausage – Pork sausage, collard greens, cheddar cheese, sage, onions, green peppers and tomatoes seasoned to perfection in a crispy flour tortilla.
 
Each 8-ounce box includes three Soul Rolls.
 
“Consumers are expecting a more sophisticated flavor experience,” says Betty Dixon, president of Soul Sisters Foods, Inc. “There is a growing popularity of bolder, more intense flavors, particularly from ethnic offerings. Studies cite 'fusion” products,' in which ethnic tastes and flavors are merged in creative ways, such as Soul Rolls, leading the way for new products.
 
“Our style reflects two northern girls’ interpretation of southern cuisine," Dixon adds. "We decided to take the egg roll and give it some soul. We will introduce products that are aimed directly at taking industry-standard products to the next level and will become known for high quality, unique favors and easy-to-prepare products,” Dixon added.
