Across every country surveyed, French fries ranked as the favorite potato dish overall, outperforming local classics and traditional favorites alike.

November 17, 2025

In a world where more than 100,000 French fries are consumed every second, the industry is facing enormous challenges. The global market for frozen potato products is growing, with an expected value of $26.5 billion by 2032, according to Fortune Business Insights.

Driven by increasing demand for convenience foods and the expansion of fast-casual and QSR brands in emerging markets, the crispy golden sticks are increasingly popular on our plates, but manufacturers face complex tasks of reconciling product quality, food safety and efficiency.

At the same time, the demands on manufacturers to make packaging more sustainable are increasing alongside a lack of qualified personnel.

The journey of French fries from the potato field to table requires highly automated system solutions and well-thought-out processes. The key is finding a flexible packaging machine which also meets further needs.

With the increasing number of factors influencing packaging solutions such as hygiene, reliability, flexibility and efficiency, manufacturers require the right technologies and a partner who has their needs in mind. Leading suppliers in the packaging industry understand the challenges manufacturers face – and aim to ensure fries are perfectly processed, precisely packaged and each bag is reliably marked on its way to the consumer’s plate.

Automation for Efficiency, Flexibility

As margins are under pressure, some of the latest packaging systems take the process of fries packaging to the next level. By providing the highest output speeds in the industry while minimizing wear and tear, these solutions address multiple pain points of frozen food manufacturers.

Equipment with smoothly running continuous-motion profiles reduce vibration, ensuring that the mechanics have a longer lifespan with less maintenance, significantly reducing downtime. Product-in-seal detection should help avoid open bags.

Due to their elongated shape, fries are particularly suitable for vertical packaging solutions. High-precision systems ensure that the exact required quantity always fills the bags.

Advanced packaging equipment guarantees flexibility: Whether the fries are packed for retail or in large portions for food service, the same line can process not only different pack sizes but also various types of packaging.

Whether pillow bags or block bottom bags, pack style flexibility helps futureproof the investment.

Modern solutions address challenges faced by French fry production – starting with highly automated systems that support manufacturers in times of a shortage of skilled operators.

Tool-less changeovers and extensive guidance on the HMI simplify the setup of new recipes by automatically calculating sensor positions and indicating the change parts that need to be used. Additionally, the machines are designed with operator ergonomics in mind, like reduced working heights and retractable conveyors, ensuring that operators can work efficiently and comfortably.

Advanced Sealing, Sustainable Material Solutions

The freezing process effectively and efficiently preserves the French fries. For this reason, the barrier demands on packaging are less complex. Nonetheless, the challenge in packaging fries is to ensure bags are reliably sealed tight.

Additionally, they require optimized air expellers for safe product packaging and transportation without resorting to less secure bag perforation. Servo-driven vacuum draw-off belts with continuous motion ensure gentle film transport, constant bag length and strong long seals.

As coding and marking play a crucial role in ensuring compliance, traceability and operational efficiency, some of the newest machines offer quick and easy access from both sides to adjust settings.

With the right technology, brand owners can enhance sustainability without sacrificing speed or quality.

While sharp-edged French fries make biopolymers or paper unsuitable, advanced solutions still exist. By reducing film thickness of monomaterials or using kraft paper, manufacturers can minimize plastic consumption, lower costs and reduce packaging taxes where applicable.

This approach also boosts productivity through extended runtimes and fewer film changes.

Sophisticated sealing technologies ensure bag tightness with both thin Polyethylene and thicker laminates while allowing significant reduction of bag length. The hot air long seal implementation includes algorithms ensuring even the first bags are properly sealed, reducing waste.

Combining automation, reliability and flexible packaging formats, state-of-the-art systems address all requirements of modern frozen food production. For manufacturers looking to enhance efficiency and meet evolving market demands, the right partner and technology make all the difference – ensuring that perfect French fries reach consumers as intended, every time.
