Upon bidding for a new flooring project at a Chipotle Mexican Grill, Denver, Colo., Western Industrial Technology, Inc. (WIT), Orange, Calif., reached out to Arizona Polymer Flooring (APF), Phoenix, Ariz., for a system that met the restaurant chain’s existing specifications.

Attributes included:

  • Urethane cement mortar providing durability, moisture control and thermal shock.
  • Urethane cement topcoat providing chemical resistance and slip resistance.

APF submitted system data sheets, including a description of the system, performance characteristics and physical properties for the CastorCrete RT-B System. Upon review, the Chipotle team determined that the CastorCrete system met all the same requirements of the chain’s original system, yet at a lesser cost.

Founded in 1991, WIT is a professional contractor specializing in the installation of concrete floor finishes and related services for industrial, retail, commercial and public works markets.

CastorCrete is a unique line of urethane-modified concrete designed for the most demanding food and beverage processing areas where high resistance to impact, abrasion, chemicals and organic food acids is required. It’s formulated with renewable raw materials and contains no VOCs, making it an ideal option for environmentally friendly projects. Additionally, CastorCrete offers exceptional thermal shock resistance, and is available with an anti-microbial additive to inhibit the growth of bacteria and micro-organisms.

CastorCrete RT-B, which was spec’d for this project, is a heavy duty, flowable urethane mortar that is broadcast with colored quartz. It’s designed to resurface moderately deteriorated concrete and withstand extreme physical and chemical abuse, including steam cleaning, carts and heavy impact. CastorCrete RT-B produces a textured surface ideal for wet environments.

WIT installed CastorCrete RT mortar with an aggregate broadcast and CastorCrete Cove Base across Chipotle’s kitchen and freezer areas, which receive the most impact and exposure to cleaning chemicals. The entire area was then sealed with CastorCrete Urethane Topcoat, which provides a durable, chemical-resistant surface in a satin gloss finish.

This system enabled the Chipotle team members to clean the floor several times a day with a nylon brush, squeegee and water hose without contributing to significant wear and tear.
