Now in its third year, the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), Alexandria, Va., and United Fresh Produce Association, Washington, D.C., present Global Cold Chain Expo 2018.

Here is a rundown of some of the latest innovations in equipment, supplies and services introduced and showcased at GCCE 2018.

LOW-CHARGE CENTRAL SYSTEM

Frick RDC

Here, Frick’s single RDC60A module services four dock evaporators for a cold storage application.

The new low charge central system (LCCS) from Frick Industrial Refrigeration, a Waynesboro, Pa.-based division of Johnson Controls, is a high-efficiency central refrigeration system with a total system ammonia charge of approximately 1.5-3 pounds per ton of ammonia.

This reduction in refrigerant charge significantly enhances the safety of food and beverage plant personnel and people living or working in the vicinity of a plant.

The system’s driving innovation is localized condensing made possible via remote distributed condensing (RDC) units managed by Frick’s patent-pending control system. Instead of feeding centrally condensed ammonia through the system, only ammonia vapor is distributed through the plant. It is then condensed locally, near the evaporators.

The RDC units, which include a condensing heat exchanger (adiabatic, plate and frame, air-cooled or evaporative) and a small liquid supply vessel, are placed near DX evaporators, the point of liquid use.

As a result, the new system eliminates centralized condensers, the high-pressure receiver and large, long supply lines full of pumped liquid.

The design of the patented LCCS also retains a traditional engine room too, which offers the same flexibility, efficiency and familiarity as a traditional liquid recirculation system, but only contains compressors and a control panel – no liquid ammonia storage vessels. This allows the use of larger, more efficient (up to 25%) compressors.

3D, SHUTTLE-BASED AS/RS

Advance Storage Products Rover

Advance Storage Products introduced Rover, a highly configurable, 3-dimensional, shuttle-based AS/RS that is ideal for food and beverage manufacturers and distributors.

Advance Storage Products, Huntington Beach, Calif., introduced Rover, the next generation of automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS).

Rover is a highly configurable, 3-dimensional, shuttle-based AS/RS that is ideal for food and beverage manufacturers and distributors, whose operations demand flexible high-density storage with great throughput.

Rover advantages include:

  • High Density. From selective to deep lane storage, Rover provides the ability to configure lane depths to match slotting needs.
  • Modularity. Easily expanded throughput (additional vehicles or VRCs) or storage capacity (racking).
  • High throughput. Multiple Rover vehicles can work in a single aisle, allowing throughput unmatched by traditional AS/RS.
  • Design flexibility. Vary storage depths within a lane, configure to existing building footprints and output to multiple locations.
