Americold Begins Program to Replace Municipal Water with Rainwater to Cool its Equipment

Piping from the rainwater collection pond at Americold's Indianapolis facility runs the entire length of the building, branching out to the engine rooms where it is used.

Rainwater drains off the roof and from the parking lot into the 1.2-million-gallon retention pond at Americold’s Indianapolis site.

Water piping travels the length of Americold’s Indianapolis site to an engine room.
Americold uses water to cool the refrigeration condensers used in its facilities for its cold storage operations. At the same time, the company cares about the environment and conserving natural resources. So, it is implementing a new Rainwater Harvesting Program that replaces municipal water with rainwater, resulting in significantly reduced water consumption and cost savings.
The project, launched in its Indianapolis facility, has resulted in:
- Water Reduction – Nearly 6M gallons/year based on water utility volume decrease.
- Salt Reduction – 71,000 pounds/year based on water softener salt savings.
- Rain fills the site’s rainwater storage tanks/retention ponds, allowing 70 percent of the site’s water consumption to be replaced.
- This program has the potential to collect nearly twice as much rainwater as the facility uses.
