The Columbus (Neb.) Telegram reported that Cargill Value Added Meats, Wichita, Kan., will purchase Lopez Foods' beef processing plant in Columbus, Neb.

Emerson Power Transmission, St. Louis, said it purchased System Plast S.p.A., a Telgate, Italy-based producer of engineered modular belts and custom conveyor components.

Food processing and distributing giant George Weston Ltd., Toronto, said it expects during the first quarter of 2009 to sell its U.S. fresh bread and baked goods business to Grupo Bimbo, S.A.B. de C.V.

Beef processor FPL Foods LLC, Augusta, Ga., said it will close its West Columbia, S.C., plant at the end of January, only eight months after opening the facility.

VersaCold Logistics, Vancouver, B.C., and Atlas Cold Storage, Toronto, officially merged and will operate under the named VersaCold Logistics Services.

Kraft Foods Inc. appointed Robert A. Herron as the new vice president and general manager of Kraft Food Ingredients Corp. (KFIC) in Memphis, Tenn.
