Study shows fewer Americans are eating breakfast

The No. 1 breakfast food is eggs — with 65% revealing that as their go-to morning meal.

The average American only eats breakfast three times a week, according to a new study. In fact, 13% of respondents admitted they rarely — if ever — eat breakfast in the morning.

The study, conducted by OnePoll, UK, in conjunction with Sabra, White Plains, N.Y., examined the overall eating habits, preferences and behaviors of 2,000 Americans, and uncovered unique trends among breakfast eaters.

For instance, the No. 1 breakfast food is eggs — with 65% revealing that as their go-to morning meal.

When it comes to the Top 5 breakfast foods, 58% reach just for coffee in the morning, while a further 56% opt for cereal to get their day started.

Other notable breakfast foods include newer, trendier options such as avocado toast and hummus toast — enjoyed by a combined 29% of Americans. Men between the ages of 25-34 choose avocado toast and hummus toast options for breakfast over any other demographic.

Beyond those basics, Americans still love a good sandwich — with 46% choosing a breakfast sandwich to fuel their day.

And, 42% of those studied admitted to preferring crisp bacon in their morning meal.

The study also found significant differences between those who opt for something savory to eat first thing vs. those eating a sweeter breakfast. For example, those who consumed a savory breakfast can work for nearly another hour before needing a boost — 50 additional minutes to be exact, which adds up to more than 5 hours per week of productivity. Those who devour a savory breakfast prefer rock and pop music, enjoy watching sci-fi movies as well as thrillers and tend to make more money than their sweet breakfast eating counterparts.

Profile of a savory breakfast eater:
- Prefers rock and electro music
- Prefers sci-fi and thrillers
- Makes more money
- Is a night owl
- Likes cats
- Gives more hugs
- Most likely to own their home
- Most productive at 10:54 a.m.
- Crashes at work at 2:53 p.m.

Profile of a sweet breakfast eater:
- Prefers classical, jazz, and pop music
- Prefers comedies, romance and action movies
- Has a lively social life
- Is an early bird
- Likes dogs
- Crashes at 2:03 p.m.
