RETAIL MARKET MANEUVERS: Internet grocerPeapod,Skokie, Ill., is offering its own “restaurant-caliber” Chef Express Smart Selections prepared meals, developed by Chicago chef Michael Foley.

There are six meals in the ready-to-heat line, including sesame-crusted salmon with citrus mashed potatoes; pulled pork enchiladas; chicken breast with home-style bread dumplings; whole wheat linguini with butternut squash, pecorino and sage; Szechuan beef and vegetable stir fry, and hearty country turkey meatloaf. Prices range from $9.99 to $11.99 for a meal that serves two to three people.

Said Foley, “Each of my Chef Express Smart Selections meals balances proteins with complex carbohydrates and combines a touch of olive oil with lots of herbs and spices to fill a need for customers whose lifestyles demand convenience, fresh flavors and smart nutrition.”Foley has more than 25 years experience as executive chef and proprietor of Chicago’s Printer’s Row restaurant. He now consults for food companies including Kraft and Kashi. Peapod, a subsidiary of Royal Ahold, operates in 22 U.S. markets.

Peapod spokeswoman Elana Margolis toldProgressive Grocerthe new entrée line will be available in the Chicago market, borrowing on the company’s area production kitchen. It was undetermined whether the ready-to-heat program would roll out to additional locales.
